Heat buford5/29/2023 Buford, at the time The New Yorker's fiction editor, persuaded celebrity chef Mario Batali to take him on as free help - a kitchen slave. The book's conceit is that it's a behind-the-scenes account of the kitchen of a big-city restaurant. But where the first book was a case study of people seemingly dead to the joys of life, Heat is a chronicle of artisans consumed by passion. And Italy, once again, figures as the staging ground of momentous events. It's interesting to see, then, that Buford's new book, Heat, returns him to the sweaty, boozy fold of pasty, beefy and slightly deranged young men. These British thugs eventually head off to Turin for a match, and the rampaging that ensues becomes the book's vivid centerpiece. It was an engrossing piece of reportage in which Buford, an American expat living in England, trailed a group of pasty, beefy and somewhat deranged soccer hooligans. More than 15 years ago, Bill Buford's first book, Among the Thugs was published. And the series continues all summer long on NPR.org. All Things Considered talks with writers about their favorite buttonhole books. All readers have them - and so do writers. Call them buttonhole books, the ones you urge passionately on friends, colleagues and passersby.

Sons and lovers 19135/29/2023 This personal family conflict experienced by Lawrence provided him with the impetus for the first half of his novel – in which both William, the older brother, and Paul Morel become increasingly contemptuous of their father – and the subsequent exploration of Paul Morel's antagonising relationships with both his lovers, which are both incessantly affected by his allegiance to his mother. Lydia Lawrence wasn't born into the middle-class. He believed that his mother had married below her class status. Letters written around the time of its development clearly demonstrate the admiration he felt for his mother – viewing her as a 'clever, ironical, delicately moulded woman' - and her apparently unfortunate marriage to his coal-miner father, a man of 'sanguine temperament' and instability. Lawrence began working on the novel in the period of his mother's illness, and often expresses this sense of his mother's wasted life through his female protagonist Gertrude Morel. It was not until the 1992 Cambridge University Press edition was released that the missing text was restored. Garnett, as the literary advisor to the publishing firm Duckworth, was an important figure in leading Lawrence further into the London literary world during the years 19. The original 1913 edition was heavily edited by Edward Garnett who removed 80 passages, roughly a tenth of the text. Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece, tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and budding artist.

Phyllis schlafly feminist fantasies5/28/2023 Schlafly became a household name in the early 1970s when she launched STOP-ERA, the anti-feminist organization formed to prevent ratification of the gender-equality amendment. As she grew in influence, it was exactly the activist framework pioneered by feminists that she used in her long, and ultimately unsuccessful, efforts to stop them. “I consider you an Aunt Tom,” National Organization for Women founder and writer Betty Friedan famously told Schlafly in a 1973 debate, repurposing an expression for racial betrayal and leveling it against a woman who used her public stature to argue for the continued confinement of women to the domestic sphere.īut perhaps the great irony of the most famous anti-feminist icon in recent history is that Schlafly couldn’t have done it without feminism. She fought for what she called the “rights of the wife” against the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, which would have guaranteed equal rights to women in the Constitution, but herself was an accomplished activist and writer with a law degree. The life of conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly, who died on Monday at age 92, is riddled with ironies. She is an assistant professor at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center and co-host of the Past Present podcast. Nicole Hemmer is author of Messengers of the Right: Conservative Media and the Transformation of American Politics.

Simulacron5/28/2023 The features implemented in the virtual room app are locomotion control by teleportation and continuous movement, rotation by snap turning, interactable objects such as a mirror, grabbable objects which the user can hold in the virtual room, and sockets to place digital objects in the virtual room. In order to take advantage of the increasing opportunity, a virtual room application based on Android OS for Oculus Quest 2 is developed in order to learn about virtual reality development workflow on a VR headset using Unity game engine. The development of computer technology where computer components are much smaller in size, have better computational capacity, and low cost has made VR technology more available and offers more and more opportunities as computer technology develops even further. Metaverse and VR (virtual reality) technology brings a lot of benefits to some sectors of life, especially education because VR technology makes it possible for users to be placed in a simulation of a certain scenario or situation which helps with the user’s learning experience.

Dead souls sam riviere5/28/2023 A story about a scandal that has shaken the literary world and an accusation of serial plagiarism. In a conversation that lasts until morning, he will hear Solomon Wiese's story of his spectacular fall from grace. Reading it felt like overhearing the most exhilarating, funny, mean conversation imaginable-which is to say it made me extremely happy and I dreaded it ending' Megan Nolan, author of Acts of Desperation'I first heard about Solomon Wiese on a bright, blustery day on the South Bank.'Later that evening, at the bar of the Travelodge near Waterloo Bridge, our unnamed narrator will encounter that very same Solomon Wiese. It's funny, smart and beautifully written' Alex Preston, The Guardian'I absolutely adored Dead Souls. 'Mordant, torrential, incantatory, Bolano-esque, Perec-ian, and just so explosively written that I had to stop and shake the language-shrapnel from my hair and wipe it off my eyeglasses so I could keep reading' Jonathan Lethem'Full of clever postmodern flourishes, self-referential winks and riotous set pieces. |
